In Sudan and Somalia, trained nurses, physicians and medical assistants use THINKMD clinical intelligence technology in a program through Alight, formerly the American Refugee Committee. The goal of the program is to improve quality healthcare delivery and to monitor the workforce and the overall disease burden of newborns and children under-5.

The challenge

When people are displaced from their homes, countries, or lives, often it is simply their basic needs that are focused on. Formerly the American Refugee Committee, Alight, is built on the belief that basic needs are essential, but a life is one that is filled with joy, dignity, connection and purpose.

The partnership

Alight provides healthcare and clean water, shelter, protection and economic opportunity to more than 3.5 million people in 17 countries each year. The four-decade old humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization teamed up with THINKMD in 2019, training nurses, physicians and medical assistants to use clinical assessment technology in their programs in Sudan and Somalia in order to improve quality healthcare delivery and to monitor the workforce and the overall disease burden of newborns and children under 5 in a conflict zone.

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, Alight and THINKMD expanded their services to include screening and diagnostic capabilities directly related to COVID-19 through a decentralized technology network. This allowed teams to get a better handle on tracking the virus amongst vulnerable populations.

What the technology looks like

A mobile application, available on mobile phone or tablet in English and Arabic, powered by clinical intelligence technology, which enables community health workers and qualified health providers to perform accurate, clinical assessments for mothers, newborns and children under 5.

Technology users generate real-time, geo-tagged data with each assessment and follow-up, generating a powerful digital data set on the health of vulnerable populations, enabling patient tracking and detailed workforce monitoring. Aggregated data enables epidemiologic and outbreak surveillance while disaggregated data enables customized reports.

The results

THINKMD’s scientifically validated technology has shown a 94% adherence to the Under 5 World Health Organization (WHO) protocol across Alight’s programs. The protocol aims to reduce death, illness and disability, and promote improved growth and development among infants and children aged less than 5 years.
